In today’s rapidly advancing digital imaging landscape, we often find ourselves needing to handle low-resolution images. When low-resolution images are enlarged, the outlines become unclear, and the details blur, causing significant inconvenience in usage. Today, Booster is here to introduce a smart image enlargement tool called “Upscayl.” Utilizing algorithms trained through deep learning, Upscayl can enlarge low-resolution images with minimal quality loss. It enhances image details, sharpens outlines, and effectively improves the blurriness issue common in low-resolution images. Below, I will provide instructions and features of Upscayl, enabling everyone to easily manage the frustration of insufficient image resolution. Now, let’s begin!

Step 1 | Download the Upscayl Installation File
First, let’s open the software release page. Usually, here we will choose the latest version to download. Once you find the latest version, you can find the installation file for your operating system under the Assets section below. For the Windows operating system, you can download the installation file named upscayl-x.x.x-win.exe.

Step 2 | Install Upscayl
After the download is complete, double-click on the installation file. Once the window shown in the figure below appears, we will:
- Set the installation path.
- Click on 【Install】

Next, wait for it to complete the installation.
Using Upscayl
After opening Upscayl, we will see the interface as shown below. The left side of the interface is the control panel, and the right side is the image display area.

Single Image Enlargement Operation
Step 1 | Click on 【SELECT IMAGE】 to choose the image we want to enlarge.
Step 2 | Click on 【GENERAL PHOTO】 to choose the model we want to use. Each model here will have slightly different enlargement effects. It’s recommended to try different options.
Step 3 | By default, Upscayl will automatically place the enlarged image in the same folder as the original image. If we want to set a different output folder, click on 【SET OUTPUT FOLDER】.
Step 4 | Click on 【UPSCAYL】 to generate the enlarged image.
After the enlargement is complete, you can see the comparison between the original and enlarged images on the right side of the interface. The contours of the enlarged image will appear sharper and clearer.

Batch Image Enlargement Operation
Step 1 | Open 【Batch Upscale】. At this point, the 【SELECT IMAGE】 below will change to 【SELECT FOLDER】 as shown in the figure below.

Step 2 | Place the images you want to batch upscale into the same folder. Here, please ensure that this folder contains only images in png, jpg, jpeg, or webp formats.
Step 3 | Click on 【SELECT FOLDER】 to choose the folder you just used.
Step 4 | Click on 【GENERAL PHOTO】 to select the model you want to use.
Step 5 | Click on 【UPSCAYL】 to generate the enlarged images. After completion, you can see the message “All done!” on the right side of the interface. However, this time there won’t be a comparison image. You can directly open the folder to view the results. Additionally, this time the new images won’t be placed in the same folder as the original images. Instead, they will be placed in a new folder called 【xxx_upscyled】. You can click on 【Open Upscayled Folder】 to directly open it.

Additional Explanation
Double Upscayl
On the left side of the interface, below the model selection, there’s an option called 【Double Upscayl】. If this option is checked, Upscayl will perform the enlargement operation twice. For example, the default is to upscale the original image by four times. If checked, it will become 4×4=16 times.

Modify Default Output Image Format
The default format for output images is png. However, we can actually modify it in the 【Settings】. Here, we can choose the format as png, jpg, or webp.
